About the IIT JAM Mathematics exam
The IIT JAM Mathematics (MA) paper is one of the seven test papers of the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (IIT JAM), a national computer-based entrance exam held once a year by one of the IITs on rotation. It is the entry route to M.Sc. Mathematics and related programmes at the IITs, IISc and other institutes that accept JAM scores. Eligibility, seats, important dates and the cut-offs are in the official JAM information brochure and change every cycle, so always check them there.
Every JAM paper has 60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours, in three sections: Section A has 30 single-answer multiple-choice questions (10 of 1 mark and 20 of 2 marks); Section B has 10 multiple-select questions of 2 marks; Section C has 20 numerical-answer questions (10 of 1 mark and 10 of 2 marks). A wrong MCQ answer costs one-third of its marks (⅓ for a 1-mark and ⅔ for a 2-mark question); multiple-select and numerical-answer questions carry no negative marking. The test is computer-based and in English.
The Mathematics paper tests proofs-oriented undergraduate mathematics: real analysis, calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and abstract algebra. Questions are conceptual and application-based, so reading a book once is not enough: you need to solve many problems under a time limit.
Maths me proof wali soch chahiye: formula ratne se kaam nahi chalta, har theorem ki shart (hypothesis) yaad rakho kyunki options usi pe trap lagate hain.
How to prepare: Build the definitions and standard counter-examples first, then solve previous-year JAM questions topic by topic, and attempt a timed mock every weekend. Take our free Mathematics mock to find out where you stand, and see the IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics paper too if your plan involves a second subject.
Always check the latest official notification for the current exam pattern, syllabus and eligibility.

IIT JAM Mathematics mock test questions with answers
Q1. Evaluate lim (1 + 2/n)ⁿ as n tends to infinity:
Evaluate lim (1 + 2/n)ⁿ as n tends to infinity:
- A. e
- B. e²
- C. 2e
- D. 1
(1 + a/n)ⁿ → eᵃ, so with a = 2 the limit is e².
Q2. The sum of the series Σ 1/[n(n + 1)] from n = 1 to ∞ is:
The sum of the series Σ 1/[n(n + 1)] from n = 1 to ∞ is:
- A. 1
- B. 1/2
- C. 2
- D. The series diverges
Writing 1/[n(n + 1)] = 1/n − 1/(n + 1), the partial sums telescope to 1 − 1/(N + 1) → 1.
Q3. The radius of convergence of the power series Σ n! xⁿ / nⁿ is:
The radius of convergence of the power series Σ n! xⁿ / nⁿ is:
- A. 1/e
- B. 1
- C. e
- D. ∞
The ratio of consecutive coefficients is (n/(n + 1))ⁿ → 1/e, so R = e.
Q4. The function f(x) = |x| on ℝ is:
The function f(x) = |x| on ℝ is:
- A. Discontinuous at 0 and not differentiable there
- B. Differentiable at 0 but not continuous
- C. Differentiable at every point
- D. Continuous but not differentiable at 0
|x| is continuous everywhere, but the left and right derivatives at 0 are −1 and +1, so it is not differentiable at 0.
Q5. The subset (0, 1) of ℝ with the usual topology is:
The subset (0, 1) of ℝ with the usual topology is:
- A. Compact
- B. Closed and bounded
- C. Open and not compact
- D. Open and compact
(0, 1) is open, but it is not closed, so by Heine–Borel it is not compact.

IIT JAM Mathematics — FAQs
How many questions and how much time are there in the IIT JAM Mathematics paper?
60 questions for 100 marks in 3 hours: 30 single-answer MCQs, 10 multiple-select questions and 20 numerical-answer questions. Check the current JAM brochure in case the pattern changes.
Is there negative marking in IIT JAM Mathematics?
Yes, for the single-answer MCQs: one-third of the question's marks is deducted for a wrong answer (⅓ for 1-mark and ⅔ for 2-mark questions). Multiple-select and numerical-answer questions have no negative marking.
What does the IIT JAM Mathematics mock test on this site contain?
A free 30-question set of single-answer MCQs for Mathematics (MA) with 1 mark per question, 0.33 negative marking and detailed solutions, to be taken in 90 minutes. Multiple-select and numerical-answer questions are not part of it yet.
Is IIT JAM Mathematics more about theory or calculation?
Both, but theory decides the harder questions. Know every definition and theorem with its hypotheses, because options are built around missing conditions.
How many months are needed to prepare for IIT JAM Mathematics?
Around ten weeks of steady study covers the syllabus once if you already know the undergraduate basics. Add timed mocks every week in the last month.
Is the MA paper asked in English only?
Yes, IIT JAM is conducted in English, so the questions and options on our mock tests are in English as well.
Is the IIT JAM Mathematics mock test available for free?
Yes. You can start with free IIT JAM Mathematics mock tests without logging in. Log in for free to save your results and see your rank among Himachal aspirants.
Is the IIT JAM Mathematics mock test available in Hindi?
Yes. Every question, option and explanation is available in both Hindi and English, and you can switch language at any time during the test.
Is the test interface similar to the real IIT JAM exam?
Yes. Tests run in a CBT interface with a question palette, Mark for Review & Next, Save & Next, section tabs and an auto-submitting timer, just like government computer-based exams.
